Changing /etc/hosts on android device

I have a 4.0 Android, installed the SDK.

in adb shell, I become root, but cannot change the /etc/hosts file, that contains

root@android:/system/etc # cat hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
74.125.93.113 android.clients.google.com





root@android:/system/etc # id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)
root@android:/system/etc # ls

Yep - because the filesystem is mounted read-only.
