Subject: [Q] Sylpheed

Greetings Usenet Community (specially ng group)
Maybe someone can answer my questions to the sylpheed newsreader on linux [mint]
1. I had read some about the smtp authentication, thought it was to answer a user private on his mail account, right?
2. As i understand it, the message-id generation isnt needed if i dont have an own domain name?

Yours sincerely,
Christian

Yes, SMTP is the transport protocol for E-Mail (the corresponding
transport protocol for news is NNTP).
The authentication can be very similar depending on the server
configuration (e.g. plain text username + password over an encrypted
connection).

The Message-ID is mandatory for the news system to work. And it must
be globally unique "for all time". Without globally registered names,
like domain names, it is hard to create unique Message-IDs.
In general it is never required that you generate the Message-IDs
yourself. The server will add a Message-ID for you if you inject the
article without one.
You have only take care to really create no Message-ID at all (not even
the empty header field) if you want to delegate this job to the server.
